The Sustainable Lawyer?
The purpose of this initiative is to keep lawyers, law students and interested parties up to date with the relationship between the legal world and the environment and sustainability. The aim of this page is to keep a blog of changes in the area and raise awareness. Through LinkedIn, the aim is to develop an active network of sustainability-conscious lawyers and law students.

This initiative and site was founded by Laurence Chapman, a Law student at the University of Leicester who hopes the platform will grow, educating and resonating with like-minded people.

What is Sustainability and Sustainable Development all about?

The most frequently used definition of sustainability comes from the UN World Commission on Environment and Development: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

This has been refined and expanded upon by many academics and research bodies. For example, the UCLA Sustainability Committee which defines sustainability as “the physical development and institutional operating practices that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly with regard to use and waste of natural resources." The committee holds that "Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health and vitality. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite, and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences of the ways in which resources are used."

In an age where environmental and climate change is a threat to modern society as we know it, developing nations, communities and economies in a progressive and sustainable manner is of paramount importance, as understood by many.

However, acting sustainability and being environmentally aware is not simply a personal or government responsibility, it takes companies and corporate stakeholders to engage and develop to make their practices more sustainable. This will develop through legislation, lobbying and corporate social responsibility initiatives. Through their work and contacts, lawyers can play an important role in the drive towards a more sustainable future.
